PAL
is the most commonly found light on Australian airstrips. PAL
is not only approved by the CAA, it was developed in a joint effort
between CAA (or Department of Aviation as they were then known)
and Artcraft Engineering. Airport Lighting Specialists are now
the manufacturer and have manufactured PAL lights in Melbourne
(Australia) since 1997.
PAL
lights are lightweight yet strong. An early version of the PAL
(V7/913) was approved by Department of Aviation in 1972. An upgraded
version (V7/1222) was approved without restriction in 1982.

When
the Manual of Standards (MOS139) superceded the Rules &
Practices for Aerodromes the performance requirements for
threshold/end lights changed. None of the existing threshold/end
lights in the market complied to the new regulations. In
order to make the MOS139 upgrade as painless as possible,
Airport Lighting Specialists developed a new lens that can
be quickly and easily fitted to existing PAL fixtures resulting
in fully compliant threshold/end lights. |

PAL
lights can be manufactured in a number of different configurations
to accommodate a variety of different lamps. The more recent Australian
installations tend to use 6.6 Amp lamps, in either G6.35 or P28
configuration. Older Australian airstrips tend to use 4.0 Amp
BA20 lamps. See exploded diagrams of PAL light in G6.35
and BA20
configuration.
